Freshers! - Welcome to Durham!

Picture
Congratulations on getting the results you needed to find your way to the best university in Britain!!

Durham is one of the greatest, historical, most beautiful and tight knit cities in the UK. Ranked best UK city in 2007 although compact Durham has almost everything a student would want and if it doesn't just get on the train to Newcastle!

Almost every student who comes to Durham, The Bubble, The Big D, D-town, whatever you want to call it loves the place and their three years here. We are sure you will too and DUGS is here to make sure you get the most out of your university experience! We've got lots lined up for the coming year including exclusive events for you, our new freshers, organised by our wonderful social secretary who you can see enjoying her freshers to the left!!

The majority of Durham's geography students are a member of DUGS making us one of the largest and most active societies in the university! The benefits of being a member of DUGS, for a relatively cheap £15.00 (DUGS membership is more than half the price of many of Durham's other leading 'academic' societies!), are huge! With access to inspiring guest lectures from world leading geographers, new and exclusive career networking events, module and field trip reviews from past and present students, an online book sale and numerous socials throughout the year we believe, and judging by our large membership us Durham geographers believe, that it's worth it!

Below you can find our Fresher's Noticeboard! In the run up to Fresher's Week and throughout the whole year this board will be packed with all the information you need to get through your first year unscathed! It will update with all the latest information for your needs so be sure to check back regularly!

We hope you manage to spend some time to look around our site and see what DUGS is all about and make up your own mind about whether you want to become part of the DUGS community! If you have any other queries about anything from the sorts of things you need to bring to university for a geography degree to what lectures are like to do not hesitate to ask any questions on the DUGS Fresher's 2011/12 Facebook page, or email one of the exec members and they'll be willing to help!

See you in October!!

Fresher's Noticeboard!

"Around the World in 80 minutes Challenge!"
Fresher's Party 2011/12.
Date - Friday 14th October, at 2000, in Vane Tempest, DSU.

A bar crawl, through lots of Durham Colleges, with alcohol and a geography related theme? What more could you want on the DUGS Fresher's Social?!!

We're not going to ruin all the surprises for you, we'll let you get your thinking caps on and try to work it out, but:
  • A series of colleges
  • A series of countries
  • A series of beverages
  • A series of teams
  • A Points Tally - awarded at the discretion of the Exec, bribes welcome.
  • A fabulous prize
  • Possible free entry into one of Durham's finest clubs
Are you up for the challenge? If you are join us on the DUGS Fresher social. Grab all those who do geography in your college and make this your first bit of geography bonding, maybe you'll emerge victorious.

Don't fancy the challenge? Don't worry. We will be running another event for those of you who don't fancy a night out, same time! Meet in the same place, tbc, in the DSU and DUGS will provide alternative entertainment! Get to know some of the exec and everything DUGS can offer you in a more relaxed and memorable setting!! We'd love to see you there!

So how can I join DUGS?

So you've come to your decision and have decided to splash out the outrageously meagre £15.00 for life membership to DUGS, compared to £20.00 for the History Society or £40.00 for the Law Society, but how can you join DUGS?!

To join simply fill in the membership form that can be downloaded below and send it, along with a cheque for £15 payable to DSU Societies Account, to:

Max Higgins, DUGS, Department of Geography, Science Site, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE.

Alternatively you can put the form and cheque in the DUGS pigeon hole on the bottom floor of the geography department, opposite room W007.
