President's welcome

2018 - 2019

Picture
Hi, I’m Emma, a third year BSc Geography student from Collingwood! I am the current President of Durham University Geographical Society (DUGS), a society that I hope will become a big part of your time in Durham. I will be overseeing this year’s executive committee which has very big plans for the year! These include two freshers-focussed social events, which are a great opportunity for first-year students to meet students from other colleges. We also organise regular academic talks, which enable our members to expand their geographical knowledge outside of core lectures, with guest speakers from different universities or other external groups. After Christmas, we host the infamous Geography Ball, which sold out in under 15 minutes last year! The exec has several new ideas for this year – make sure to follow us on social media to keep up-to-date!

All the best for the upcoming year,

Emma Lancaster
(DUGS President 2018-2019)

(2017-2018)

Dear Geography Freshers and existing society members,

My name is Sally, and I am a third-year BA geography student from St Chad’s College. To begin with I would like to congratulate you on achieving a place at Durham; one of the best geography departments in the world and currently ranked third in the UK.

As President of the Durham University Geographical Society (DUGS) it is my job to oversee an exec of eight members and widen your geographical experience at Durham through a variety of exciting events. We are very fortunate to be sponsored by EY (formally Ernst and Young). This company is one of the ‘Big 4’ Professional Services firms, there is a wide range of opportunities for undergraduates and graduates with EY. Interaction and dialogue with the company is facilitated through exclusive events during the academic year, for example CV workshops and networking drinks. DUGS is an important asset to your academic studies; I hope you will use it to broaden your academic interests and develop new knowledge via the guest speaker events. It is also the perfect opportunity to make friends in other colleges at the social events.

The new exec is full of ideas and we hope to develop some new aspects of DUGS through a debate and a bi-termly newsletter. Best of luck for the following year.

(2016-2017)

Dear Geography Fresher,

My name is Sarah, and I’m a third year BA geography student from St Mary’s College. As President of the Durham University Geographical Society (DUGS) I would like to firstly congratulate you on your hard work achieving a place at Durham, a geography department which is currently ranked third in the UK, and has a world-renowned academic reputation. As a society we are extremely fortunate to be sponsored by EY (formally Ernst and Young). This is a company which is one of the ‘Big 4’ Professional Services firms, and offers a wide array of exciting opportunities for both undergraduates and graduates, in departments such as Tax, Corporate Finance and Accounting. This partnership with EY allows DUGS to offer exclusive EY opportunities for our members, including informal networking events and career skills workshops. I hope you will utilise DUGS as a space not only to expand your academic interests and career opportunities, but also as a social setting in which you can meet fellow students outside of the lecture hall. This year we are hoping for the annual DUGS Ball to be bigger and better than ever so I hope to see as many of you there! Good luck for the year ahead!
